ANTIQUES

A young Georgian man named Lado is involved in smuggling antique furniture from Georgia to Russia.  Two women await him in St. Petersburg.   Manana is the owner of the antiques warehouse, and Medea is Lado’s girlfriend who is tired of his immaturity.

Medea, who recently sold her house in Georgia, goes to view an apartment in St. Petersburg’s historic center.  It is on sale for a very low price, but it comes together with its owner, an old man named Vadim.  Medea agrees to the deal and moves in.

Vadim is an opinionated, old-fashioned character.  His bedtime reading is Sun Tzu’s The Art of War, and his only companion is an old wardrobe where he keeps old family photos.  He has an estranged son Peter; Vadim annulled his inheritance rights.

One day Vadim rips up most of his family photos and sends the empty wardrobe to Peter.  Is this an act of callous mockery, a twisted farewell gesture of a lonely man’s cry for help?

Peter goes to confront his father and meets Medea.  The two like each other despite the conflict surrounding Peter’s inheritance.  Their acquaintance happens right at the time of ongoing mass raids on migrants.

Lado is caught and deported.  The authorities also raid the antiques warehouse, arresting the migrant employees.

Suffering from cognitive decline, Vadim gets lost in the city.  With some civilian assistance police find him and deliver him home.  He dies in his bed with Peter and Medea at his side.

Vadim’s apartment is cleared out and tidied up.  The ancient wardrobe is restored and returned to its former home.
